Sharpen Scissors

Scissors can be a little more challenging to sharpen than a single blade tool.  Most scissors will be have a chisel grind edge, meaning one side is flat while the other side is sharp, or beveled. When preparing to sharpen a pair of scissors you will want to focus only on the bevel angle of the blades.

Step One:

If you are able to disassemble your scissors prior to sharpening it is best. If that is not possible, hold the scissors with one hand and open them as wide as they will go.  Working with one side of the scissors at a time, you will first need to locate the bevel side of the blade.

Step Two:

While holding the stone in the opposite hand, place the diamond side against the scissor bevel at a 45 degree angle. Adjust the stone until is lays against the scissor bevel. You will be able to feel it “lock” into place when you are holding the stone at a proper sharpening angle.

Step Three:

Begin sharpening the scissor bevel by first moving  the stone in an up and down motion down the length of the blade.

After a few passes of the up and down motion, move the stone along the blade edge from left to right maintaining a 45 degree angle until sharpened.

Step Four:

Repeat these steps for the opposite scissor blade.

Reassemble the scissors and open and close them a few times to remove any burr that may have formed during sharpening.

Step Five:

Clean your scissors and test their sharpness by cutting a piece of paper.  Should you desire a sharper blade, repeat steps 1-4.

When sharpening is complete make sure to follow these steps for cleaning and maintaining your Bevel Sharp.
